UNEDITED FOREWORD
David Maciejewski co-author of this website has a diagnosis of Apraxia of Speech. This is an example of a first draft of a piece of his writing. It highlights how the written use of language differs from what you think in your head, in other words what you put down on paper is often different from what you are thinking. Often when re-reading your own work you see what you thought you had written versus what is actually on the page. At times you do not realize what has been missed out. Sometimes it can take 4/5 re-reads before you notice the mistake and frequently mistakes are still missed.
We want give and aspect of someone who had experience this disabilities and how affected their daily activities. This disability can affect so many different skills the child needs to have to be successful in school or just life in general. There is services that will help that child to succeed in school and life, those service very helpful for child. Do not underestimate your only child to compensate the only activity for themselves because they know what will work best for them. They will be able to overcome so many obstacles that stand in their way and accomplish them. A disability affects them but does not mean they cannot do it, it just will take more time for them. Granted test and assessment might show them that they have average or poor intelligence in that area but they might have intelligence in another area. The assessment are basically test what show weakness the child has and will have work on. Understand the disability is not all of child's life but just part child life they will have work on and overcome it. They feel normal because that what normal is to them. The child going have their up and downs they just need encouragement and support. You will be amaze what they can do with support.
I experience at young age saying that I would not making through high school because of this disability. The reason for that is because I did poorly on the assessment and test. One of test I need to say air plane but at this time I could not say airplane but could so home and my home was near the airport. So I compensate I pointed up the sky but I had to be mark wrong because I could not say it. Assessment proves what was my weakness but is kind of stating the obvious but did not take in count my compensate skills. Assessments are black and white so there is only one right answer. I had weakness in construction and fine motor skills and organization.
I had struggle in school with writing, communication and organization I was able to compensate from these areas weakness, I able to overcome these obstacle and be successful in school. I had my struggles and I will always going through struggle but how I come out of it strong because I went through it. There days I thought I was not to make it but I did. Sometime it did not make any sense why had I go through it, I did wish things came easier to me. I realize I am not the only who has it. According Zwicker, Harris, and Klassen (2012) “DCD is one of the most common disorders affecting school-aged children.” The way I overcome with disabilities is that I learn have to work hard, not being afraid to ask for help from teachers and ask question, seek out one on one time with teachers. I had to work twice as hard as other students.
Overall dyspraxia can frustrating for the child but they are able to deal with it and perform their daily activity regular basis. I feel it is important that child, teacher, parents communication line are open so everybody knows what going on. It is team effort figure what is the best for child but they have to be in making the decisions. Dyspraxia can be scary thing and a lot of question are going through your head but realize nothing is impossible, just mean take more work to overcome this obstacle, but does not define child incapable of not doing thing just will take little more practice.
